Agricultural technology experts from Thailand visited Tianpu and Longxing Communities to share experiences in soil & water conservation and rural regeneration

A five-member delegation from the Land Development Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand, visited the Shatian Soil and Water Conservation Outdoor Classroom in Tianpu Community, Yujing District of Tainan City, and Neopu Mudstone Area Soil and Water Conservation Park in Longxing Community, Longqi District of Tainan City on November 20th. The delegation was accompanied by SWCB staff members as well as Professor Hsu Chung-li, chair of the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology.

According to the SWCB Tainan Branch, the visit of the delegation comprising agricultural technology experts is part of Taiwan and Thailand’s cooperation projects, aiming to introducing Taiwan’s ,”Visiting”planning and execution of slopeland development as well as how the soil and water conservation outdoor classroom was established and operates.

Visitiny Shatian Soil and Water Conservation Outdoor Classroom not only gives a professional introduction to knowledge in soil and water conservation, but also runs as an environmental education venue which has been certified by Environmental Protection Administration under the SWCB’s provision of consultations and in cooperation with Tianpu Community. The visit today was guided by Ms. Yang Su-juan, director of Tianpu Community. She explained to the guests the planning and establishment of the outdoor classroom, the community’s participation in rural regeneration, and how to create a natural environment that suits native species. All of the guests could experience the importance of soil and water conservation.

In order to introduce to the guests how remediation engineering and rural regeneration together gave new life to the extensive mudstone area in Southern Taiwan, the SWCB Tainan Branch arranged a visit to Neopu Mudstone Area Soil and Water Conservation Park in Longxing Community. Community director Chen Zheng-yin and Professor Hsu Chung-li explained the properties of the mudstone, remediation engineering methods, and the use of the earth dam, revegetation, as well as water storage and irrigation in order to conserve and properly use water and soil resources, with many accompanying benefits, including promoting tourism and environmental education and increasing farmers’ income. The visitors found the trip rewarding and impressive.

The SWCB Tainan Branch further stated that both Tianpu and Longxing communities completed their own rural regeneration projects after the community workers had finished the four-stage training programs, which included “care, advanced, core and rejuvenation.” Also, by implementing the annual execution plan which included re-activating industries, labor employment and material sourcing, and environmental improvement, the communities have moved steadily toward realizing their visions. The quality of the implementation is recognized by the Council of Agriculture’s Outstanding Agricultural Construction Award and Public Construction Commission’s Public Construction Golden Quality Award.
