Taiwan-Japan Technology Exchange on Sediment-Related Disaster Prevention

The Soil and Water Conservation Bureau (SWCB) invited 12 Japanese experts and academics to Taiwan for the “2015 Taiwan-Japan Seminar on the Mechanism, Prediction and Assessment of Sediment-Related Disasters” and relevant site visits during Oct. 4-10, 2015. SWCB put its effort into facilitating international disaster prevention exchange and cooperation, and enabling the world to see Taiwan’s slopeland disaster management and on-site monitoring technologies, as well as its experience on debris flow prevention.

This bilateral exchange began with the in National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) on Oct. 5th, the first day of the seminar. Graced by representatives from the domestic industry, government and academia, the seminar covered topics on responsive measures and technology advances regarding compound sediment-related disasters. The seminar was followed by a visit to the SWCB, a dam-breaking test at NCHU’s Huisun Forest Area, and visiting to land reconstruction sites, including the Lishan landslide area and the reconstructed engineering at Daxing Village, Hualien County. It was hoped that these arrangements could promote Taiwan’s advances in soil and water conservation technology, in addition to further experience exchange on large-scale slopeland disaster prevention strategies and achievements.

This one-week international event broadened a wide diversity of technology exchanges between Taiwan and Japan, and also elevated Taiwan’s reputation across the world in slopeland disaster warning, prevention technology and measures, as well as hazardous area zoning and risk management.
